PHILIP FRUYTIERS (1610-66)

Four Children of Peter Paul Rubens and Helena Fourment with Two Maids

c. 1638-9

RCIN 452433

Four of Rubens’s children – Clara-Johanna (aged 7), Frans (aged 6), Isabella-Helena (aged 4) and Peter-Paul (aged 2) are setting off to play and to picnic on the fruit in the basket, accompanied by their two maids. The classical arches allude to the triumphal arch in the garden of Rubens’s house in Antwerp.
