Emperor Charles V (1500-58)

c. 1514-16

RCIN 403439

Charles V was the dominant ruler of 16th-century Europe; this portrait conveys his imposing physical appearance. In 1514 Charles was betrothed to Henry VIII’s sister, Mary. He sent an image of himself - possibly this painting - to the English court. The rosemary symbolises love and friendship.
