The Honeymoon

The bride and bridegroom left the Palace showered with rose petals. For the Princess's going-away outfit, Hartnell designed an ensemble of dress and matching coat in mist-blue with mushroom-coloured accessories. A matching bonnet-beret in blue felt was trimmed with a pompom of ostrich feathers and curved quills.

The couple departed Waterloo station with the Princess's corgi 'Sue' for their honeymoon, the first part of which was spent at Broadlands in Hampshire, home of Prince Philip's uncle, Earl Mountbatten. The second part of the honeymoon was spent at Birkhall on the Balmoral estate.

Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip issued the following statement from Buckingham Palace before they left for the second part of their honeymoon:

Before we leave for Scotland tonight we want to say that the reception given us on our wedding day and the loving interest shown by our fellow-countrymen and well-wishers in all parts of the world have left an impression which will never grow faint. We can find no words to express what we feel, but we can at least offer our grateful thanks to the millions who have given us this unforgettable send off in our married life.
