Entertainment in Bath at Victoria Art Gallery [Bath]

Johann Christian Fischer (1733-1800)

Through paintings, prints and drawings in the collection of the Victoria Art Gallery, along with important loans, this exhibition tells the story of entertainment in Bath from its Georgian heyday until the present day. Her Majesty The Queen has lent Thomas Gainsborough's portraits of Johann Christian Fischer and James Quin. A virtuoso oboe player and composer, Fischer performed frequently at the Assembly Rooms in Bath during the 1760s and 1770s. James Quin was one of the most popular and successful actors of the day, and retired to Bath on account of the variety of entertainment on offer.
