A watercolour showing Queen Victoria's eldest son Albert Edward, Prince of Wales as a small child. He is shown full-length, standing and facing forward with a brightly coloured ball in his hand. Inscribed on verso: Edward P. of Wales afterwards Edward VII. A sketch by the Queen 1843. The nursery life of the royal children offered Queen Victoria enormous scope for her own painting and drawing. This watercolour of her first son, Albert Edward, shows him dressed in skirts, as was the custom with small boys, and with a parrot – one of the family pets.
