-
A pencil and watercolour drawing of a taven scene with two men seated in an interior, one raising his glass. On the left, a maidservant with a bottle. The sheet is circumscribed with a black ink line border. Inscribed below on the modern mount, in a later hand, presumably transcribed from an earlier mount, 'Jonathan Wild'. One of 134 figure studies contained in a volume bought at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811. Jonathan Wild (bap. 1683-1725) was a notorious and shadowy figure from London's criminal underworld, operating on both sides of the law. He was executed in 1725, and became a popular subject for novelists, playwrights and satirists.
