Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
Lady Chambers c. 1770 - c. 1780
Pencil and wash | 20.5 x 12.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914409
-
A pencil and wash drawing of a female figure seated on a sofa, holding a sleeping child in her lap. Inscribed below on the modern mount, probably copied from an earlier one, 'Lady Chambers'. One of three studies in the Royal Collection probably showing the same sitter (RCINs 914433, 914434). Lady Chambers has not been identified, but is possibly the wife of the architect Sir William Chambers, who married in 1752 and was knighted in 1771, or Sir Robert Chambers. A drawing in the Royal Collection (RCIN 914408) is catalogued by A. P. Oppé as 'Sir Samuel Chambers', but the sitter has not been identified.
