A pencil and watercolour drawing of a seated female figure, wearing a purple dress, white apron and black hat and holding two saucers in her lap. Behind, a garden with a round summerhouse. Inscribed below on the modern mount, probably copied from an earlier one, 'The wife of Mr Whitbread's gardener at Woolmer, Herts, 1784'.
Woolmers Park in Hertfordshire was owned by Samuel Whitbread, a brewer, MP and friend of Paul Sandby. Another version of this drawing is in the British Museum, in pencil and grey wash, and inscribed in Paul Sandby's hand, 'Fanny Servant of Mr Whitbread at Woolmer's' (1872,1012.3417). Another drawing made by Sandby in the garden at Woolmers is RCIN 917554, dated 1783.Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
