A watercolour of a French military review. A pair with the English Review (RCIN 913720), this watercolour was intended to be framed for hanging. The audience watching this French army review include a number of monks, underlining the difference between Protestant Britain and Catholic France – a source of distrust on both sides. As at the English review, as many of the men are watching the women as are surveying the troops.
