An uncoloured print of an auction taking place in a street. The auctioneer stands at the rostrum around which bidders are gathered, his hammer raised in his right hand. On the left, a man pulls a post chaise or sedan chair along. In the left of the foreground, a small child is pulled along in a wheelbarrow. Houses stand in the background.
This print is a plate from Rowlandson's A New Book of Horses and Carriages. The Rhedarium, published by Elizabeth Jackson in 1784 (see Nicholas Knowles in High Spirits. The Comic Art of Thomas Rowlandson, p.257).
