Within a circular border bearing Latin inscription with further verses below. Cut down. This print forms a pair with a portrait of her husband, Johann Wilhelm, of which Cassiano did not own an impression (Holl.XV.763). The print of Antonia de Lorraine was later included in the Fürstlichen Geschlechts und Hauses Gülich, Clev, Berg und Mark … Stamm-Register (Arnheim 1610). This pint is lettered around the portrait: "ANTONIA LOTHARINGICA D.G. DVCISSA CLIVIAE, IVLIACI, BERGARVM. COM: MARCHIAE ET RAVENSBVRGI, ETC."; along the bottom: "Quæ manus artificis tria sic confudit, vt vno ... / Diuinae in tabulam mentis imago fluit."; at the lower right: "Crispianus Passæ, cœlator ad / Viuum depinxit Coloniæ. 1599;" at the lower left Greek lettering. This print is part of a group of portraits of French queens and noblewomen by Crispijn de Passe I in the Cassiano collection, where the sitter is shown bust-length in a lettered roundel, beneath which are lines of verse. This print formed part of an album of French royal portrait prints assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo in Rome and described in an early nineteenth-century inventory of prints in George III’s library as Kings of France, Queens and other illustrious Personages. The album was arranged chronologically, with kings and their consorts together, while the latter part of the album was devoted to the female aristocracy of France. It was dismantled later in the nineteenth century and its prints incorporated into the series of Engraved Royal Portraits (organised dynastically).
