Soft-paste Sèvres porcelain seaux à bouteille. Beau bleu ground decorated with tooled gilt foliate scrolls, floral wreaths, trails and crossed branches; two oval reserves painted with scenes from classical Greek and Roman history and mythology.
Provenance
Commissioned by Louis XVI in 1783 & scheduled to take 23 years to complete; only about half was finished by the time of the King's execution in 1793; purchased by George IV from Mr. Würtz of Paris in 1811 for £1,973 4s 8d, through Robert Fogg.
