Soft-paste Sèvres porcelain dinner plate with a lobed gilt rim, beau bleu ground border decorated with tooled gilt foliate scrolls, floral wreaths, trails and crossed branches, the centre and 4 oval reserves painted with scenes from classical Greek and Roman history and mythology

Commissioned by Louis XVI in 1783 and scheduled to take 23 years to complete; only about half was finished by the time of the King's execution in 1793; purchased by George IV from Mr Würtz of Paris in 1811 for £1,973 4s 8d, through Robert Fogg
