  • A silver gilt ewer and stand. The vase-shaped ewer is cast with a bacchanalian procession including Bacchus, Ariadne and Hercules. The lower part is chased with waves and supported on four tritons. The lip is cast in the form of a conch shell and drapery, held by seated figures of Venus and Adonis and the handle is formed as a mermaid with arched back. Each stand has an inset central relief of Venus Anadyomene within a broad border chased with mermaids, Neptune and Amphitrite. The rim is chased with putti rowing shells, separated by stars, and the whole is supported on three turtle and shell feet. The design of these pieces may have been inspired by the seventeenth-century Genoese 'Lomellini' ewers and dishes which passed through the Rundells' workshops in 1807, although the design is much altered from the originals. Either Flaxman or Stothard may have been the designer - the same border of rowing putti appears on the base of four wine-coolers in the Collection considered to have been designed by Flaxman.
