This bowl from Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) has a fluted rim embossed and chased overall with scrolled and geometric foliage and is inset with five oval ivory panels incised in red with scenes of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya.
Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the Ceylon Department of Agriculture on the occasion of her visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya, 20 April 1954, during her official visit to Ceylon, 10–21 April 1954.
The bowl was presented containing a talipot palm corypha umbraculifera, which was sent to Kew Gardens; this has not survived. -
