Silver gilt | 27.1 x 22.5 x 31.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 49156
-
A large, silver-gilt tankard with hinged lid, beaded scroll handle and stepped circular foot. The tankard is cast with a battle scene in relief; the lid inset with a medallion bearing on the obverse John Sobieski on horseback, in relief; the reverse with a profile of Charles II.
Provenance
The battle scene was once considered to reproduce a work by Cellini but it is now known to depict John Sobieski, King of Poland, relieving Vienna from the Turks in 1683. George IV commissioned an identical tankard from William Pitts in 1811.
