Laurence Whistler (1912-2000)
Engraved glass panel 1968-69
-
Oval glass plaque engraved with an aerial view of the flight path above Windsor Castle. Supported in a brass frame, resting on a splayed support, springing from an oval plinth. In an upright rectangular oak veneered case, lined in satin.
For many visitors arriving or leaving the United Kingdom through Heathrow Airport, the aerial view of Windsor Castle is one of their most memorable sights. This finely etched glass panel shows the castle from the west, with Heathrow's runway in the background.
Laurence Whistler (1912-2000) was a British poet and artist, who specialised in glass engraving. He was the younger brother of British designer Rex Whistler (1905-1944) and the father of musician and glass engraver Simon Whistler (1940-2005). Whistler revived the tradition of point engraving on goblets and windows, and also created engraved glass prisms. Examples of his work can be found in Salisbury Cathedral, the Ashmolean Museum and Balliol College, Oxford.Provenance
Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by the British Airports Authority on the opening of Heathrow Terminal 1, 17 April 1969.
