The portraits of father and son on either side of this medal are identified by the rather curious legends, CAROLVS.D.I and CAROLVS.D.II. The D might represent the title D.G. or Dei Gratia ('By the Grace of God'), but Edward Hawkins (in Medallic illustrations of the history of Great Britain and Ireland to the death of George II, London, 1885) thought it to be the Dutch de ('the'), and thus an odd mix of Latin and Dutch. Peter van Abeele was based in Amsterdam; as here, he usually worked the two sides of his medals separately, each hammered into relief from behind (repoussé) and then joined together by a rim.
Obverse: Draped bust of Charles I with long hair falling over right shoulder and wearing a falling lace collar, the field decorated by a tracery of flowers. CAROLVS . D. I .
Reverse: Draped bust of Charles II almost full face, hair long falling over both shoulders and falling plain collar, wearing a riband supporting the George of the Order of the Garter. CAROLVS . D . II . -
