A mahogany and parcel-gilt swinging-cradle with an arched superstructure with draped replacement silk curtains; the boat-shaped cradle with a ribbed frame-work suspended from ormolu brackets at either end; turned stretcher above an upholstered foot-rest.
Provenance
The cot was lent to an exhibition at the London Museum in 1937 by Queen Mary. The museum label states '[the] cot was made for Queen Victoria on the birth of the Princess Royal ... and was used for all Queen Victoria's subsequent children. It was given to HM Queen Alexandra when Princess of Wales and, in due course, to HM Queen Mary'. An upholster's card notes 'This cot renovated and restored by C. Hull, upholsterer and tappissier á la Reine, 85 Gloucester Road, N.W., June 1894'; the date coincides with the birth of Queen Mary's first child and eldest son, Prince Edward of York.
