The false signature inscribed on this miniature gave rise to the belief in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries that it was a work by Samuel Cooper. The sitter was identified at the time as Louisa Hollandina, second daughter of Frederick V and Elizabeth, Queen of Bohemia. The miniature suffered from extensive retouching in the nineteenth century making its assessment difficult, but it is now believed to belong to a group of twelve miniatures by Nathaniel Thach in the Royal Collection which all represent members of the House of the Palatinate. Most of these are copies of existing portraits and can be dated to c.1650. The sitter has recently been identified as Sophia, Electress of Hanover, twelfth child and fifth daughter of Frederick V and Elizabeth of Bohemia, who became the first Elector of Hanover in 1692. She was the mother of George I, King of England. Inscribed with a false signature and date: 'S.C. /1648'
