Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1640-1660) c.1650-1720
Watercolour on vellum laid on card with a gessoed back | 7.3 x 6 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 420091
-
A miniature of the Duke of Gloucester corresponding in size and description to the present one was recorded in the Royal Collection soon after the Restoration. It seems likely to be this miniature which may well have been produced in the seventeenth century as the vellum (rather than ivory) support suggests. It is not by the hand of Samuel Cooper, as suggested in an early-twentieth century inventory, but derives from a portrait of the Duke by Johann Boeckhorst of which there is a version in the National Portrait Gallery (no. 1932) and another in the Royal Collection (407495).
