Within a copse of conifer trees, a group of seventeenth-century cavalry soldiers stand in a pool of reddish light cast from the setting sun. A roughly-shod prisoner is brought forward towards two mounted officers by a third who binds the man’s hands behind his back. A small child clings to the prisoner, staring pleadingly back at his accusers. A tented martial encampment lies in the valley beyond. The horseman sporting a cavalier’s plumed hat, leather jerkin and gauntlets indicates to the dismounted soldier to escort the captured spy to the encampment. A third horse, laden with saddlebags, grazes nearby. Signed and dated lower left: G. Berg 1846
