Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) was the fifth daughter and youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Here the Princess is holding a miniature of her father, Prince Albert, who had died in 1861. She is leaning against the wall on the terrace of the Rosenau (the palace in Saxe-Coburg where Prince Albert was born, which is now in Bavaria in Germany), where Queen Victoria was staying in the summer of 1863. The Queen noted in her Journal that 'The painter, Lauchert…has stopped on purpose at Coburg, in order to paint a full length picture for me of darling Baby'. Queen Victoria thought the background was too dark, unlike the blue skies that Winterhalter had painted at Prince Albert's request, and there was a discussion about sending to Berlin for lighter colours. In the end it was decided not to alter the painting.
Signed and dated: R Lauchert [initials in monogram] 1863. Inscribed on the back with the names of the artist and sitter, her age (six and a half), and as painted at the Rosenau in 1863.Provenance
