Lady Ravensworth was a noblewoman with many connections at court, serving as Maid of Honour to Queen Victoria from 1841 until her death. She was a talented artist and copyist; this copy of a painting by Dirck van den Bergen (1645-90) was presented by her to George IV in 1816. On a shady knoll with trees above, left, besides a country lane, a shepherd in a red shirt, black waistcoat and hat with brown breeches rests in the shade; his flock of goats and two cows rest, one kid suckling, on the road to the right.
Provenance
Presented to George IV; recorded in the Middle Room upper floor at Carlton House in 1819 (no 172); at Windsor Castle in 1858
