In the foreground in a meadow, a shepherd stands over his sheep and cows; in the middle distance the town of Coburg with the Ehrenburg Palace on the right, and the church of St Moritz behind; in the far distance on the right, the Veste Coburg on a hill
In 1530 Martin Luther preached in the fourteenth-century Church of St Moritz several times during the Easter season, before moving to stay for several months in the Veste Coburg, or Coburg fortress, historical seat of the independent duchy of Coburg in Franconia, now part of the state of Bavaria. The Ehrenburg Palace, on the right in this painting, dates originally from the mid sixteenth-century. After a fire in 1690 Albert V, Duke of Saxe-Coburg, had a new Baroque-style palace built, and in the nineteenth-century, Ernst I, father of Prince Albert, directed Karl Friedrich Schinkel to redesign the palace in the Gothic Revival style.
In addition to this painting W Fenoulhet's work is represented in the Royal Collection by his view of Gotha; RCIN 404004. Lewisham Local History and Archives Centre in London has two landscapes by this artist, one of Slagrave Farm, and the other of Sion House.Provenance
Probably acquired by Prince Albert in October 1841; recorded hanging in the Queen's Dressing Room (Room no 213) at Windsor Castle in 1878
