A group of figures are gathered before the hearth in a country inn; a young boy with a zither on his lap drinks from an earthenware krug whilst a fiddler, seated beside him, plays to a drowsy young man wearing a green jacket and a tall hat. A boisterous man with a decorated hat and stick bursts in through the door on the left.
The precise narrative of this slightly naive scene cannot be determined, but it obviously concerns young men on a carnival escapade. The artist is similarly obscure: it is inscribed with the place and date - Munich, 1836 - and the name of the artist 'Haetterz', with an initial and abbreviated first name that looks like an 'S' followed by 'Pag'.Provenance
First recorded at Osborne House, 1876, where the name is transcribed as 'Pag Haetterz'
