Head of a Sibyl c.1690-1730
Oil on canvas | 67.5 x 51.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406130
-
The female figure has been described as a Sibyl (or prophetess). She is shown bust-length, facing half to the right but with her head turned half to the left. With her left hand she is clasping a yellow mantle around her shoulders. The picture may be a companion to the Head of a Youth (RCIN 406131); both works seems too feeble to be by Cignani himself.
Provenance
This and RCIN 406131 possibly the 'Two Heads...by Carlo Cignani' acquired in Rome for George III by Richard Dalton; probably the paintings recorded in the Gallery at Windsor Castle in 1792 and certainly there in the Queen's Private Waiting Room in 1813
