This is an indifferent adaptation, with some variations in the costume, of the c.1788 oval portrait of Stanislaus Poniatowski by Johann Baptist Lampi in the Hermitage.
The last King of Poland is wearing a plum-coloured velvet coat with a lace cravat, a broad blue riband, the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle and the Polish Order of the White Eagle.Provenance
Acquired by George IV from Colnaghi's in 1819; added to the Carlton House inventory dated 1819 (no 555); taken to Hampton Court and listed there in the Portrait Gallery in 1861 (no 895)
