Mary of Modena (1658-1718) when Duchess of York c. 1677
Oil on canvas | 212.9 x 136.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405890
-
In the eighteenth century the sitter in this portrait was identified as the Duchess of Richmond, while the sitter in another Royal Collection painting closely related in design (RCIN 404409) was formerly known as Mary of Modena. However the royal ducal coronet worked into the decoration of the carved vase of the current portrait makes Mary of Modena a more likely candidate and it seems possible that early references to the two pictures have been confused.
