The Marriage of Queen Victoria, 10 February 1840 (oil sketch) Signed and dated 1840
Oil on board | 19.7 x 27.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405851

This sketch was produced in preparation for Hayter's painting of the Marriage of Queen Victoria (RCIN 407165) and may be the one which the Queen saw on 26 February 1840. The sketch is very close to the final design, but the setting is a less fanciful representation of the Chapel Royal in St James's Palace than that in the finished painting. It was acquired by Queen Victoria in the posthumous sale of Hayter's work in 1871.
Signed: 'GH'. The composition is painted within a simple feigned frame on which is inscribed, as if on a label: 'VictoriÆ REGINÆ NUPTIÆ / 1840. Inscribed on the back: This is my original sketch / for the picture which I painted / for her Majesty. and / which was afterwards engraved. / George Hayter.'Provenance
