At the start of the eighteenth century many Dutch artists started to imitate the elevated classical manner of landscape created by Nicolas Poussin and much disseminated through the work of his brother-in-law, Gaspar Dughet. This small canvas is an example in the style of Cornelis Huysmans, who worked in Mechelen and Antwerp and visited England.
