A Saint Baptizing c.1620-50
Oil on canvas | 65.2 x 75.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405527
-
What is shown appears to be a scene of baptism of early Christians. Before a pair of corinthian columns in a Classical landscape a saint is baptizing an elderly man. Figures stand about them, some of whom are turbaned. The painting is related to a drawing by Antonio Carracci of the same composition and subject at Chatsworth. The drawing is called Saint Philip Baptizing the Eunuch, a popular subject for pictures, however the Eunuch's chariot is not shown, making it more likely to be a representation of Saint Paul Baptizing.
Provenance
Probably the 'Italian Scene' by 'Bartholomeo' (Breenbergh) in the King's Closet at Buckingham Palace in 1819 (no 726); first certainly recorded in the Prince of Wales's Bedroom at Hampton Court in 1861 (no 656) as Domenichino
