Princess Victoria would have been about six years old when this portrait was painted. She is carrying a feathered hat and there is a fold of ermine over her arm. Later, when she was Queen, Victoria described the picture in a letter as very badly painted and as done from the bust by William Behnes, of which there are many copies and replicas, including one in the Royal Collection. An engraving of the painting was published in 1830 and a number of versions of the portrait were made.
Signed and dated: W. Fowler Pinx . . . / 1825Provenance
Probably painted for the Duchess of Kent; recorded in Room no 12 at Frogmore House in 1878
