Christ on the cross with St. John supporting the Virgin and Mary Magdalen kneeling to the right; in the middle distance is a procession with Christ carrying the cross issuing from the gates of Jerusalem.
Adriaen Ysenbrandt became a Master of the Bruges Guild in 1510 and was active there until his death in 1551. His name has become associated with various works which may in fact have been created by different (unidentified) artists, but which have stylistic similarities. A Crucifixion with a similar composition is at Hatfield House and is attributed to 'Ysenbrandt'.Provenance
One of the group of early Flemish works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 77 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
