Anne, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange-Nassau (1709-59) c.1735
Oil on canvas | 77.0 x 64.6 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404498

Princes Anne, the eldest daughter of George II, married William IV Prince of Orange in 1734. Here she is shown wearing jewels in her hair and an ermine-lined robe over her right shoulder. This is a version of the portrait of the Princess which was engraved by the younger Faber in London in 1735. A companion portrait of the Prince of Orange by Van Dyk was engraved by him in the same year.
The strict profile (with hair done up and un-ornamented neck) is a deliberately Classical effect reminiscent of coins and medals. Such an formula was always popular for monarchs because of its associations with the coin of the realm, but was also much used at this date for poets and thinkers.Provenance
Purchased for King Edward VII by the Lord Chamberlain in 1908
