A view of Bernstorff Palace Signed and dated 1863
Oil on canvas | 50.1 x 73.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404495
-
The subject of this painting was previously identified as 'Landscape near Coburg' in the 1909 catalogue of Buckingham Palace, although it almost certainly depicts Bernstorff Palace, Denmark, the summer residence of Princess Alexandra and her family in the nineteenth century. Situated north of Copenhagen, close to the sea, the distinctive white façade can also be seen in the much larger painting by Frederik Christian Kiaerskou (RCIN 405124). This picture, like the Kiaerskou was probably a wedding present to Princess Alexandra on her marriage to the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII in 1863.
A note on the reverse retains an indistinct inscription, but the artist is possibly Frederik Anton Schepelern (1796-1883), a Danish lithographer and drawing teacher.
