A copy after an original Wouwermans design best known through a work sold at Sotheby’s Amsterdam in 1976 (Sale 26-7 April 1976, no. 84). A forge, left, covered in creeper with a woman with a child sitting before it, lower left; before it are four horsemen one of whom dismounts from his white steed, centre, while its foreleg is attended by two smiths; three children in foreground.
The painting appears in Pyne's illustrated 'Royal Residences' of 1819, hanging in the King's Dressing Room at Windsor Castle (RCIN 922105).Provenance
Acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice (Dutch and Flemish List, no 82)
