This is a small copy of the celebrated altarpiece in the Frari church in Venice by the Venetian Renaissance artist, Tiziano Vecellio, known as Titian. It was painted during Hayter's second visit to Italy when he studied at Parma, Florence, Rome, Bologna and Venice. Hayter produced two etchings based on this painting in 1820 and 1833. He had given one of the first twelve proofs of the latter to the then Princess Victoria. The Queen hung the painting in the room next to her Dressing-Room.
