This painting is probably the ‘Pietro da Cortona, A Battle of Joshua’ hanging in 1749 in the 2nd Room of Leicester House, residence of Frederick, Prince of Wales. The Duchy of Cornwall Accounts for 28 October 1748 record a bill for 6 guineas from Petit for a ‘picture frame Carved and gilt in Oyle Gold to a picture of a Battle out up at Lester House in the Dining Room’; on 4 September 1748 John Anderson was paid 3 guineas for ‘Cleaning ye Battle of Peter de Cortona’. This painting is certainly the ‘Battle Piece, Parrocel’ in the Prince of Wales Bedroom at Hampton Court in 1861.
Neither of the historical attributions is correct; this seems to be a battle piece painted in Italy in the style of Jacques Courtois, Il Borgognone (1621-1673). It shows mounted cavalry and foot soldiers engaged in battle; on a rise to the left a brown horse rears, its rider holding up a torn banner; in the left foreground a turkish-looking figure on a white horse rides to the centre; on the right a ruinous tower.Provenance
First certainly recorded at Hampton Court in 1861
