This is a faithful copy of a painting by Isaac van Ostade in the Accademia, Venice, perhaps made for Consul Smith as well as owned by him. It shows a winter landscape with frozen river, bridge in middle ground, houses on right bank; in front of nearest house, trunk of gnarled oak tree is ringed with frost; in foreground two men talking, one with a sled; a boy pulls another man also seated on a sled.
Provenance
Acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice (Dutch and Flemish list, no 128)
