The horses had been Prince Albert’s favourite hunters and Thomas Portman was a Stud Groom. They are depicted in Windsor Great Park, to the south of the Castle (which can be seen in the distance), near Cumberland Lodge. Signed and dated: W.H.Hopkins / 1863. Inscribed on the back with the names of the artist and the horses, and the date, 1863.
