Landscape with Figures and Cattle Drinking at a Fountain
Oil on canvas | 60.1 x 74.7 x 1.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403543
-
This is by an unidentified artist working in a style close to that of Berchem; it can be compared to Berchems of the 1650s, without being a copy of any of them. In foreground three shepherds and woman with child appear, all mounted, with cattle, sheep and goats. A fourth shepherd stands. On right at the foot of hill with trees there is a classical fountain; on the left in the middle distance a loaded cart approaches.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III; first recorded in the Queen's Work Room at Kew Palace in 1805 (no 8)
