The sitter was born Anna Sophia, Princess of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt; in January 1723 she married Francis Josias, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1697-1764). She was great-great-grandmother to both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
The portrait can be compared with a three-quarter-length in the Veste Coburg (M. 075). A portrait of her husband, traditionally ascribed to AG Meuser (fl. 1750s), is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 406425).
She wear a silk brocade gown with ermine robes, her hair is in the tete de mouton style, close-curled to the head, powdered and bejewelled. The ducal crown is to the left.
