Portrait of a Man 1650s
Oil on copper | 30.5 x 21.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403464
-
This is one of two small copper portraits (CWLF 22, 403498) which were presumably originally painted on rectangles and have subsequently been cut to fit a now lost decorative framing arrangement, possibly a cabinet. This is the less good of the two and is difficult to attribute.
Provenance
The works described as by van Dyck which formed part of the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice, acquired by George III in 1762 (Dutch and Flemish List, nos 19-20)
