The Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven c.1400-1500
Panel | 16.2 x 12.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403380
-
The Virgin and infant Christ are seated upon a monumental, decorative throne. Both figures are wearing crowns, emphasising the Virgin's role as Queen of Heaven. Behind the throne, stand the Archangels Raphael, holding a red orb and sceptre, and Michael, also holding a sceptre.
Before passing to Prince Albert, this panel was formerly in the possession of his relative, the German collector Prince Ludwig Kraft Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein. In his catalogue of the then recently acquired Oettingen-Wallerstein collection, dated 1854, the art historian Gustav Friedrich Waagen attributed this panel to the Russian School. The ornaments of the throne, use of strong black outlines, and the three-dimensional shaded effect of the faces, could indeed suggest a Russian origin, or perhaps even a provenance from southern or eastern Europe.
Provenance
Acquired by Prince Albert from the collection of Prince Ludwig Kraft Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein.
