Portrait of a Woman c.1610-20
Oil on panel | 112.5 x 82.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403243
-
Three-quarter-length, standing, holding a book in her left hand and resting her right arm on a Jacobean chair; she wears an embroidered black dress with pearl earrings and bracelets, with a mayoral-style chain across her bodice. Previously mis-identified as Mary, Queen of Scots with the regalia of the Order of the Thistle, it is recorded as having been largley repainted in the early eighteenth century.
Provenance
Possibly one of a group of group of historical portraits acquired in 1731 with the lease of Kew House from Lady Elizabeth Capel by Frederick, Prince of Wales; certainly recorded in the King's Bedroom at Buckingham House in 1819 as Jane Grey
