Venus and Adonis 1600-99
Oil on canvas | 87.7 x 75.8 x 1.6 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403238
-
Adonis stands to the right of the centre, holding three dogs on leashes. Venus leans to the right, her head in his lap and her feet in the lower left corner. Beneath her is Cupid. This is a hard and characterless version of a composition known from an etching by S. F. Ravenet after a canvas attributed to Veronese in the ‘Cabinet M. Dupille’. Ridolfi seems to have known the same composition, and other versions exist, although whether the original composition of this very mannered design is by Veronese remains open to doubt.
Provenance
Possibly the picture of this subject acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1742 from the De Piles Sale
