Venus and Cupid Embracing c.1600-50
Oil on copper | 22.1 x 16.9 x 0.03 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402996

Venus, the goddess of love, is seated on rocks in a landscape embracing the child Cupid who stands on tiptoe at the right. At the left a satyr peers from some trees. The work is indebted to a woodcut of the subject by Nicola Boldrini, after an original painting by Titian.
Although not of very high quality, this painting is entirely typical of Turchi's style, and may be an early work by him.Provenance
First recorded as received for George IV at Carlton House from Buckingham House in June 1821 (Jutsham p. 141)
