This painting is in the style of the Antwerp-based portrait painter Adriaen Key. The identity of the sitter is unknown. He is shown wearing a small white ruff and a white doublet decorated with gold bands and closed with gold buttons. It is inscribed on the left with the date '1565'.

Purchased by Charles I; recorded in the Adam and Eve Stairs Room in 1639 (no 17); sold for £5 to Edmund Harrison and others on 23 October 1651 from St James's Palace (no 176); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the 2nd Privy Lodging Room at Whitehall in 1666 (no 176)
