The Annunciation c. 1560-1600
Oil on canvas | 106.7 x 84.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402809
-
An oil painting of the Annunciation; kneeling at a prayer-desk at the right the Virgin is shown turning towards Gabriel who alights on the left. He is holding a lily in his left hand and gesturing upwards with his right hand towards the Dove. The meeting takes place within a grand architectural interior, which is open to a garden, landscape and sky beyond. The painting is not copied from any known work by Veronese, but is a pastiche in his manner; the figures distantly resemble those in the early ‘Annunciation’ in the Uffizi.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the the collection of Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice, and framed in the Venetian panel frame typical of this source; the Italian List (no 210) mentions a Veronese painting of this subject of smaller dimensions (2ft 4in x 2ft 1in) perhaps recorded in error;
